Toyoo (Toyo) Sugiyama was born in 1921 in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. He attended Chukyo Shogyo high school and signed with Yamato in 1942.

The left-handed hitting first baseman played 49 games that year and hit .168. Sugiyama was drafted for military service in 1943 and died in combat in the Philippines in June 1945.
