Riichi Matsumoto was born on June 22, 1921 in Okayama Prefecture, Japan, and attended Kansai Chugakkou high school. The left-handed hitting first baseman played two games with Nagoya Kinko in 1940, getting a hit in three plate appearances. Matsumoto did not play in 1941 (possibly due to military service) but returned to professional baseball with Hankyu in 1942, again appearning in just two games and getting a hit in three plate appearances.

In 1943. 22-year-old Matsumoto played 57 games between first base and the outfield for Hankyu, batting .169. It was his last season in professional baseball. Riichi Matsumoto died in military service during World War II.
